The team in a nutshell
Having just celebrated our company’s 3rd birthday, we are actually feeling fairly young, considering that our core team has close on 100 years experience in ICT. You might think that sounds like we’re getting creaky(!), but we’ve all been energised by getting together with Ian Spooner, our M.D., to start Edinburgh Communications, our ICT network consulting firm. Everyone in the team has spent at least 10 years in corporate IT departments, and many of us several years in service providers too, so we’ve both got much in common with each other, and our clients. In short, we can definitely relate to being on the other side of the deal!
We really love helping people understand ICT, with a passion for the networking side in particular. We think this shared attitude is what makes our team work so well together, and we quickly agreed on our mission which is to make high-level networking expertise available to everyone.
Our team’s mix of personalities and backgrounds has meant that we’ve been well able to “fit-in” to our clients’ project teams too. Whether it’s Graham’s calm and dispassionate delivery of security policy advice from his financial sector experience, or Ian’s RAF Strike Command background occasionally causing him to slip into military mode – “Full debrief and After Action Report, guys!” – there are often moments in a project where we both share knowledge and raise a smile!
At the beginning, we chose sustainability as our main philosophy, believing that this would keep us eco-friendly, and also attract and retain business. It all sounded well and good, but after a year of running we realised that this was more a symptom of good business practice, rather than a goal in itself. A big moment for us was when we realised being ‘green’ wasn’t actually optional…. and we’re a different company as a result – Ian’s now a big fan of the train, and we have our Zero Waste Scotland pledge and ISO 14001 certification both pending!
Now with 3 years of being our own bosses under our belts, we’ve noticed that we’ve filled the role of network partner to our clients. So instead of selling and supplying kit every chance we had, we’ve provided the advice, designs, audits, and hands-on expertise to the level that our customers require. By being network partners we can naturally fill any networking skills gap in any IT team, and of course add a pair of trusted hands when needed.
What we’ve noticed from this partner-type approach is that we can get deep into the network’s nuts & bolts, designing changes that fit with your business requirements. The shared responsibility that comes with this means that we work conscientiously, like it’s our own, taking pride in putting the personal touch on both hands-on tasks, and the higher-level IT strategy assistance.
What we do
Of course we can provide fully managed services to you, or you could outsource your infrastructure team to us, which perhaps are the more traditional models. But rightly or wrongly, you might now be thinking “hmmm…that sounds expensive!”, and not to mention the lack of potential for knowledge and skills transfer in those models. Instead, a network partnership between you and us means less outlay and more value, as we design & implement features into your network to make it work for you. And in turn, a properly designed and business-aligned network means fewer changes in the future, lowering the maintenance cost in the long run! So then our team’s happy they’ve made a lasting difference, and you have that expertise a phone-call away, at a price matching the amount you actually need.
